The union for secondary teachers is being encouraged to drop strike action.

PPTA members have been negotiating better pay with the Ministry of Education, but rejected the latest offer – a $1000 one-off payment and a 2.4 percent increase over the next year.

A nationwide “no-teaching” day is being held by the PPTA tomorrow and will affect year nine students.

Year 11 students, who are preparing for NCEA exams, will be off school on Thursday.

The School Trustee Association’s Ray Newport says a resolution will only come from around the table.

“There has been progress made over the last couple of days in attempting to settle disagreement, so it’s a little bit disappointing to find out that the industrial action will proceed.”

Mr Newport believes parents will lose sympathy with teachers if the industrial action continues, because it means they will have to find alternative childcare.
