Seven helium balloons from Google Project Loon were visible from Christchurch and surrounding areas last night.
Project loon is a Google development project working to provide internet access to rural areas that was announced in June of last year. The high-altitude balloons are flown into the stratosphere at an altitude of 32km, creating aerial wireless networks with up to 3G-like speeds.
In New Zealand, the company has been working with the Civil Aviation Authority on the trial. Google chose New Zealand in part because of our remoteness.
