Tony Dow, who's known for his role as Wally in the 1950s US sitcom Leave It to Beaver, is still alive - but in care in his "last hours".

That's despite reports early on Wednesday that the actor had died.

On Tuesday (local time) Dow's management shared an official message on Facebook announcing he had died.

It was posted after Dow's wife Lauren Shulkind accidentally gave "false information" to his management team.

The post has since been removed and an updated one shared.

"This morning Tony's wife Lauren, who was very distraught, had notified us that Tony had passed and asked that we notify all his fans.

"As we are sure you can understand, this has been a very trying time for her. We have since received a call from Tony's daughter-in-law saying that while Tony is not doing well, he has not yet passed.

"Tony's son Christopher and his daughter-in-law Melissa have also been by his side comforting him, and we will keep you posted on any future updates," the statement concluded.

Dow's son Christopher said on social media it was a "difficult time."

"Dad is at home, under hospice care, and in his last hours. My wife and I are by his side along with many friends that have visited. He has a fighting heart."

In May, it was announced Dow's liver cancer had returned.

Leave It to Beaver aired for six years, notching up 234 episodes. The show ended in June 1963.
