Two contestants from ThreeNow's Heartbreak Island told AM being involved in the reality show was like being inside a "pressure cooker".
Ash Williams also elaborated on a comment she made about New Zealand men being "subpar".
Speaking to AM hosts Melissa Chan-Green and Ryan Bridge, Williams and fellow contestant Milly Forbes described life on the reality show as "heightened and intense".
In Heartbreak Island, 16 singletons are sent to a Fiji island and pitched against each other to either try and win $100,000 or find the love of their life.
Forbes, a 24-year-old from Auckland, said: "We refer to it (as) a pressure cooker, everything in there is so heightened and intense. You could like someone one day and then be absolutely repulsed by them the next day."
"So it's like you're there for love, you're there for money, it's a real mind game, so you have to keep quite level-headed, whilst all these people are coming at you for different reasons. It's quite intense," Forbes said.
Williams agreed, saying: "Everyone's there for a different reason. I also think when you're on the island, that reason changes every day."
Williams, a 25-year-old from Auckland, was also asked by Chan-Green about her comment about Kiwi men.
"I like don't go on dates in New Zealand. I just never say yes, because [Kiwi men] are all kind of like, sub-par," she said in a promotional clip for the reality show.
"No offence to all the men in New Zealand."
On AM, Williams laughed at the clip and said: "It's funny to see what [the producers] choose to put in there."
Asked about her bio on the show, in which Williams describes herself as "probably too much for you", she said her confidence was her biggest selling point.
"People take it how they want to take it - I don't care what people think about me, I don't care what the response is. I'm just happy being myself."
Heartbreak Island is streaming now on ThreeNow with two episodes released weekly on Thursdays.
