Murder She Wrote and Beauty and the Beast actress Angela Lansbury has died aged 96.

"The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 AM today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday," her family said in a statement.

Lansbury was best known to many as Jessica Fletcher in TV series Murder, She Wrote.

Fletcher was a mystery writer and amateur crime fighter whose observations always caught the criminals and beat the local police to solve the cases.

The show ran from 1984 to 1996.

She was also well-known for her role in the Disney animation Beauty and the Beast.

Lansbury played Mrs Potts, the teapot who sang the film's theme song.

She was inducted into the TV Hall of Fame in 1996.

"Murder, She Wrote has given me more worldwide attention than any other role I played in the movies or on the stage," the Tony-award winning actress said in 2013 when she was given an honorary Academy Award.

"It's a wonderful thing to be known in Spain, Portugal, in Paris, in France and Germany and everywhere.”
