Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly turned down an invite from King Charles to come to the Sandringham estate for the first family Christmas since the Queen died.

Royal author Katie Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight the Sussexes were likely to spend Christmas in California, rather than return to the UK.

The news comes ahead of the release of their upcoming Netflix docuseries, which is due out in December, and Prince Harry's memoir Spare, which is set to be released on January 10.

"Christmas is always a really special time for the Royal Family where they traditionally come together," Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight.

"That has always been at Sandringham and my understanding is that King Charles is going to follow his mother's tradition and host a family Christmas at Sandringham this year.

"Harry and Meghan have been invited for Christmas but it's our understanding that they won't be coming over to the UK, they will be spending the holiday season in California."

The last time Prince Harry and Meghan partook in the traditional Royal Family festivities was back in 2018, when they joined Queen Elizabeth II, then Prince Charles and William and Kate for church at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham in Norfolk.

However, Meghan and Harry aren't the first royals to have missed the traditional Christmas.

Prince William and Kate have skipped family time at Sandringham in order to spend the holiday with the Middleton family on numerous occasions since they married in 2011.
