Taika Waititi has joked he will "mess the whole thing" up ahead of his joint hosting of the MTV European Music Awards in Dusseldorf on Monday (local time).
Waititi is presenting the show with his wife Rita Ora from 9am.
In a backstage interview shared online by MTV, Ora spoke of her "long history" with MTV the channel and various award shows, before being told she and Waititi were the first couple to ever present the awards show.
However, Waititi joked he also had a "history" with MTV.
"I've had a lovely history with MTV in NZ - seeing it in movies, 'cos we didn't get it. We didn't even have it," he said.
Ora also told him to just be himself while presenting the awards and to go with the flow.
"He's so easy, he's a natural at all of this. It's good to just do what you want, there've been so many iconic moments because they've been off the cuff and unplanned," she said.
Waititi revealed he was surprised the award show itself was live, warning he would "mess it up."
"I seriously did not know that.
"Here's a surprise, I'm not gonna get it right - I'm gonna mess a whole lot of things up," he deadpanned.
"It's not the first time I've hosted anything but this is a big deal.
"I live my life every day like it's a live show, there's no script. I improvise it all."
The original Instagram post which announced the duo was hosting proved massively popular, with plenty of comments saying the pair were hilarious.
The 2022 MTV EMAs will be the first time the pair has worked together at a public event.
Ora opened the Rugby World Cup in Auckland in October, performing a medley of songs at Eden Park during the games.
Waititi introduced Ora on stage but wasn't directly involved in her performance.
