Taika Waititi has worn a grey skirt as he co-presented the MTV European Music Awards on Monday (local time).
While his wife, popstar Rita Ora, had eight outfit changes during the show, Waititi was a little more reserved in the fashion stakes, being careful not to upstage Ora's onstage looks.
However, at one stage, Waititi stood next to his wife wearing a full-length, grey pleated skirt - a choice that set social media alight.
"Can we talk about the fact that Taika Waititi wore a skirt to the MTV EMAs and looked absolutely stunning???" one said.
The Boy and Marvel movie director spent most of the show wearing a succession of suits that ranged in colour from teal to purple at the event in Dusseldorf.
He even managed to mock the continual outfit changes his wife underwent early in the proceedings, telling her at one point, "I'm down to my sixth costume change, I need a break."
Waititi is the latest celebrity to subvert gender norms during high-profile events.
In July, Brad Pitt wore a skirt to the red carpet of his movie Bullet Train.
The Once Upon A Time in… Hollywood actor rocked a brown knee-length skirt and matching jacket at the Berlin screening for his new film.
Pitt also paired a rose-coloured shirt and matching cardigan with the leg-flashing number, finishing off the outfit with pendant necklaces, a pair of sunglasses and black combat boots.
That move was also applauded online.
"Brad Pitt out there normalising men wearing skirts on his latest red carpet. Cheers, Brad," one commenter said.
