Kirstie Alley, the star of Cheers and Look Who's Talking, has died aged 71.

She had been privately battling cancer, her family confirmed.

"We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered," her children True and Lillie Parker said in a statement on social media.

"She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead.

"As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.

"Our mother's zest and passion for life, her children, grandchildren and her many animals, not to mention her eternal joy of creating, were unparalleled and leave us inspired to live life to the fullest just as she did," they said.

Alley had recently been diagnosed with cancer, and was being treated at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Florida in the US, her family revealed.

Alley was known for her role as Rebecca Howe in long-running US comedy Cheers. Her character spent most of the time sparring with - and fending off the sexual advances of - Ted Danson's bar owner, Sam in the show between 1987 to 1993.

She won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe for the role.

Alley made 76 other appearances on screen throughout her career, from the Look Who's Talking franchise to Drop Dead Gorgeous, Veronica's Closet, It Takes Two and Sibling Rivalry.

Her last TV appearance saw her take part in The Masked Singer as the Baby Mammoth. She was eliminated in the eighth episode.

In a tribute shared to social media, actor John Travolta - who starred with Alley in Look Who's Talking - described their relationship as "one of the most special" he's had.

"Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I've ever had. I love you Kirstie. I know we will see each other again," he captioned a photo of her, alongside a picture of the two together.

Kelsey Grammer, who played Dr Frasier Crane in Cheers, told Variety: "I always believed grief for a public figure is a private matter, but I will say I loved her."

Halloween actress Jamie Lee Curtis said despite their disagreements over politics, they "had a mutual respect and connection." The pair had worked together in 2016.

"She was a great comic foil in @tvscreamqueens and a beautiful mama bear in her very real life," Curtis continued. "She helped me buy onesies for my family that year for Christmas."
