The first full trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom shows Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry adapting to parenthood and enjoying a beer with his father, played by New Zealander Temuera Morrison.
The sequel to the 2018 film opens in December with high expectations after the original became one of the highest-grossing DC movies of all time.
The Lost Kingdom's synopsis hints there's trouble ahead for Curry.
"Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father's death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all," it says.
The trailer's early section focuses on Aquaman dealing with diapers and having a drink with his father.
"I don't know how you did it, Pops," Arthur Curry says.
"My job was a little less stressful than yours," Morrison's Thomas Curry replies.
Moments later, Curry's world is turned upside down when it appears his father's lighthouse has been burned down - and there's no sign of what happens to Thomas.
Much of the trailer then showcases the action set pieces, with only a fleeting glimpse of Amber Heard's Mera.
Director James Wan has already insisted the focus of the second film was going to be about Aquaman and his brother, not his relationship with Mera, which formed the majority of the first film.
"I always pitched this to everyone from the get-go. The first Aquaman was Arthur and Mera's journey," Wan told Entertainment Weekly.
"The second movie was always going to be Arthur and Orm. So, the first was a romance action-adventure movie, the second one is a bromance action-adventure movie. We'll leave it at that."
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom releases in Aotearoa on December 20.
