Oscar-winning actor Whoopi Goldberg says she believes former US President Donald Trump should be jailed in the notorious Guantanamo Bay detention camp, leaving the audience on her talk show shocked.
Speaking on The View, Goldberg and her fellow panelists were discussing the hush money trial involving reported payments made to Trump's alleged mistress Stormy Daniels.
While one of the panelists suggested the controversial New York City prison Rikers Island would be suitable for the under-fire former President, Goldberg went further.
"That's number one is Rikers. But, I'm okay if he goes to Alcatraz and they reopen it. You know, what about Guantanamo Bay?" she said.
Her comments saw the audience gasp in shock.
Guantanamo Bay, a military detention centre, was investigated for reported torture techniques.
At the end of the discussion, another member on the panel read aloud a legal note, which stressed Trump "pleaded not guilty to falsifying business records and has denied ever having an affair with Stormy Daniels."
At that point, Goldberg turned to the camera and said, "And that's what you do. You deny, deny, deny, lie, lie, lie, deny, deny, deny!"
On Tuesday (US time), a mistrial request by Trump's lawyer was denied in the case.
He had argued the day's testimony by porn star Stormy Daniels about a 2006 encounter was irrelevant and would only inflame the jury.
Justice Juan Merchan said he agreed there were some elements of Daniels' testimony that would have been better left unsaid.
"I think the witness was a little bit difficult to control," he said. "I don't think we're at the point where a mistrial is warranted."
