Wellington game developer A44 Games' upcoming release Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn has been launched as part of the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase on Monday morning (NZ time).
The event, which previewed some of the gaming industry's biggest upcoming titles, saw millions tune in worldwide to watch trailers for upcoming games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Gears of War: E-Day, Doom: The Dark Ages, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Fallout 76: Skyline Valley and updates on titles like Fable and Flight Simulator.
Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is a third-person action role-playing game that sees gamers attempting to save humankind from extinction by fighting against the old Gods.
"Set in the beleaguered world of Kian, you'll guide Nor Vanek, a Flintlock weapons expert, on a quest to kill the rampaging gods that have invaded her world. Blending classic Souls mechanics with a brutal, fast-paced combat system, Nor can use a combination of axe combat, flintlock weaponry, and magic, creating devastating combos - but you'll need skill to survive," a release on the Xbox Gaming blog said.
The open-world game has been praised online after that first look during the showcase, with some saying it was "one of the standouts".
The studio previously released RPG Ashen to critical success in 2018.
"What a great trailer! Well done! Looking forward to playing Flintlock," one person wrote online.
"This showcase has been fire and your game is one of the standouts for sure. Can't wait to get hands on with this," another excitedly wrote.
"This game looks amazing. Can't wait to play. Great job," a further commenter said.
Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is due to be released on July 18.
Also over the weekend, Christchurch-based game developer Black Salt Games announced its latest expansion for the critically-acclaimed Dredge.
The fishing horror game has won numerous plaudits including being nominated for four BAFTAs and has sold over a million units.
It has also been picked up as a film by Story Kitchen productions.
Dredge's The Iron Rig DLC, which will release on August 15, promises the chance to investigate a shadowy corporation known as Ironhaven, as well as adding in 50 new species of fish and a new series of "ancient disturbances".
The game already has released one DLC, The Pale Reach, which added ice-breaking antics into its fishing mechanics.
