La Niña summer bringing heat, humidity and warm seas

Weather forecasters say the country is headed for a La Niña summer.

Over the next three months, the average temperature will rise across the country and there could be too much or too little rain - depending on where you are.

NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll says across the country should brace for warmer than normal temperatures.

"The next three months are expected to be warmer than average across Aotearoa, a couple of rounds of unseasonable heat and humidity will be possible as we head into November."

And Kiwis are ready to soak up the heat.

"Go have a swim, good weather for it, just stay outside," one Kiwi said.

"Spend more time at the beach," another said.

"Don't believe it to be honest, you never know...it could be raining, could be sunny," someone else said.

And he's not wrong. Noll says La Niña means less rainfall for the South Island.

"There'll be some areas of the country that could experience drier than normal weather such as in the lower and western South Island."

But he warned the North Island might be in for flooding.

"Northern and Eastern parts of the North Island such as Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay could see periodic downpours."

But there's a silver lining. If you're hanging out for summer swims, the water will be warmer too.

Niwa says they're keeping an eye out for marine heatwaves which are typical of  La Niña weather.
