An Auckland truck driver lost control of his vehicle on Tuesday morning, hitting a bridge and then veering off into a home.
Police say it's the second time a vehicle has crashed into the house in Albany, but the owner still has reason to feel lucky.
Oleg Nefiodov's day started off with a bang - literally.
"It was actually shaking quite strongly," he says.
He was working from home when a truck crashed into the unit below him.
"It was unexpected, what can I say?" he explains.
Steve Ruggles was one of the first on the scene. He says the truck crashed into a nearby bridge then careened towards the house.
"In his effort to try and regain control, he came off the road, followed the grass down until it came to rest," he says. "There's a fair bit of devastation."
Somehow the driver managed to walk away unscathed. Neighbours heard the crash before they saw it.
"I was working from home obviously, I heard two very loud bangs," Brent Spendrff says.
Spendrff spoke to the occupant of the unit who had a narrow escape.
"He said he went for a coffee break about 10-20 minutes before this happened so I think he would've died if he was there," Spendrff says. "A well-timed coffee break."
But this is the second time a vehicle has crashed into this building.
"He's obviously upset that it's happened again, I know that he's trying to make in-roads with council for some kind of barricade here," Ruggles says.
For now, the occupants of the two affected units need to find a new place to sleep tonight.
"They have to tell us if it's stable for us to stay here. Most likely it's not," Nefiodov says.
But he's counting himself lucky - he's still standing even if the house might not be for long.
