A homicide investigation is underway after human remains were discovered in the south Auckland suburb of Manurewa.
Police were alerted to the discovery on Thursday after the occupants brought unowned property to their Moncrieff Avenue address.
Photos show police had established a cordon and erected a "scene examination" tent. What appeared to be two body bags were removed from the driveway of the home late on Thursday night.
"From our enquiries so far, we can advise the occupants of the address are not believed to be involved in the incident," Counties Manukau District Crime Manager Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua said in a statement.
"Police acknowledge them for their assistance so far and we are providing support for them."
The police specialist search group has been working at the address overnight, and Det Inspt Vaaelua said a number of enquiries are still to be carried out.
"Our enquiries are continuing today, which includes an ongoing scene examination, and the local community will see an increased Police presence in the area over the next few days," he said.
"A post-mortem examination is underway and this is expected to be completed over the coming days."
He added the priority is to confirm the identification of the deceased, however this might take some time.
A neighbour told RNZ the current occupants of the property moved in about six months ago.
