West Auckland gunman who fired at police dies from injuries

The gunman shot by police after firing at officers in west Auckland on Friday has died.

"Police can advise that the offender in critical condition following the serious incident in Henderson earlier today has died," Waitematā District Commander Superintendent Naila Hassan said in a statement on Friday evening.

"The man had undergone surgery and was in a critical condition at Auckland Hospital where he died this afternoon."

The man was in his mid-20s, and was on active charges relating to drugs and violence when he opened fire on officers.

On Friday morning, police swarmed Henderson after the man allegedly attempted to rob Henderson's Gull petrol station. Police say he opened fire at the petrol station but no one was hurt.

Supt Hassan said police "immediately" responded and tracked the man's vehicle which returned to the scene.

Police said a firearm was presented at police staff before the man drove away and proceeded to fire at them.

The Police Eagle Helicopter tracked the man's driving around the Henderson area where he was seen acting erratically and firing on multiple occasions at police staff.

Supt Hassan said police fired back at the offender on more than one occasion.

The man then drove to the Henderson police station where he exited his vehicle holding a firearm and was "challenged by armed police".

"Members of the Armed Offenders Squad approached the man and challenged him to put down his firearm," Supt Hassan said.

"He continued to brandish it and at this point police have shot the man."

First aid was immediately provided to the man and he was transported to Auckland Hospital where he passed away.

Supt Hassan said police have been locating and notifying the man's next of kin.

"Police will release further details about the man in due course, once all procedures have been completed," she said.

"Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding today's events."

In addition, both the Independent Police Conduct Authority and WorkSafe have been notified.

"We continue to ask anyone who witnessed any of these incidents, and who has not spoken to Police yet, to call our 105 service quoting file number 230317/3304," Supt Hassan added.
